Lampard's tenure at Chelsea came to an abrupt end as he fell out of favor with the club and its fans. Everton, desperate for a turnaround in their fortunes, have taken a gamble on the ex-Chelsea boss to get the job done.
Frank Lampard began his Chelsea career as a manager on a bright note as he guided the Blues to a Champions League spot whilst integrating a lot of young players in the side. Pressure was definitely going to be on the former Chelsea player and idol to better the club's performances the following season after Chelsea spent big in the transfer market.
Frank Lampard's tenure came to and end after losing to Arsenal on Boxing Day in 2020. Chelsea looked vulnerable in transition and on the counter attack, losing 3:1 in the process. Lampard was quick to blame his players afterwards, citing a lack of focus and discipline. The team had lost all confidence in him. With Chelsea's ruthless owner Roman Abramovic and his frequent history of giving managers the sack, Lampard's fate had already been decided. Lampard was sacked a month later.
Some Chelsea faithful were still convinced he would turn the situation around but there was no denying that he had lost control of the ship. Most of the Chelsea faithful were those who were still blinded by his successes as a player. After Chelsea spent over €200 million, it was clear they wanted more. Tuchel was appointed and success was immediate. Chelsea beat Manchester city three times and won the Champions League at their expense too.
Lampard's failure at Chelsea doesn't make him a bad manager. He has been given another chance at Everton after his appointment was made official. Lampard's reputation may be a little low for Everton, considering the high profile appointments they have had in recent seasons.
Everton owner Farhad Moshiri has sacked six managers since taking over in 2016. Carlo Ancelloti is reportedly the only manager not to have been sacked after he chose Real Madrid in the summer.
Lampard's first season as manager at Chelsea was encouraging and he also led Derby to sixth in the championship before losing in the playoff final. Chelsea were in the middle of a transfer ban before he took over and led them to an inspiring fourth in the Premier League. Lampard's tenure was doubtful and a long term tenure at the club was always in question. Defending set pieces and conceding goals on the counter attack were among Lampard's Chelsea weaknesses. Lampard's relationship with some senior players, notably Rudiger and Alonso, turned sour and the squad had no hope in their manager.
The continuous attacks on journalists in the press, openly criticizing his players, didn't help Lampard's case as he hung on at his beloved Chelsea.
Everton, a complicated club to say the least; still holding on to the memories of its days as league champion back in the 1994/1995 season, still clings to the hope of becoming one of the top clubs in English football again. Everton are 16th in the league, just four points above the relegation zone with an aging squad. With no manager staying for more than two years, the squad is severely imbalanced, seeking some sort of direction and control.
Everton's story is one of a lost direction, and a sad story too. A lack of vision, direction and planning at the club has left them this far behind. Sporting directors Steve Walsh and Marcel Brands are the two who have tried and failed to assert any form of culture at the club. Wayne Rooney didn't even listen to Everton when they came calling.
Lampard, although a bit unproven, remains a popular choice among the club and its fans. But this feels like a risk to both parties; one that could backfire or work spectacularly. Lampard, a manager who wants to reaffirm his reputation and Everton, a club seeking some direction and control.
How will this end?
